I haven't seen the movie yet, but I've been seeing mixed reviews about Soderbergh's new "Comdey"
The Informant!
Unlike Soderbergh's other flims, Erin Brockovich, Ocean's Eleven, Traffic, Che, this new forced comedic film is undermining Soderbergh's power to captivate people's attention.
Based on a true corporate scandal, The Informant! is full of Soderbergh's heavy-handed direction with a uppity score by Marvin Hamlisch to cue laughter from the audience. A genuinely smart script with a beautiful perfomance by the pudgey Matt Damon, racks up more points for the film.
One critic wrote, that "Hamlisch's score goofy score all but bruises your ribs by jabbing you with "isn't this hilarious?" wackiness, but ultimately the cast plays it so straight that to respond with laughter almost feels like chuckling at a funeral."
So, apparently the movie is just TOO Goofy for words, however, as Soderbergh was trying to get this goofy tone across, he pushed the envelope a bit by turning up Hamlisch's music in the film and having Matt act like an 11-year old throughout the entire movie. I may still see it just cause I can't believe Matt Damon gained 30lbs for this film!!
It did okay on Rottentomatoes.com, but I'm a bit skeptical. Maybe Soderbergh should just stick to straightforward dramas. Sorry buddy.
